AJ Styles will face Dean Ambrose for the WWE championship at Backlash WWE

The latest episode of SmackDown Live saw Dolph Ziggler and AJ Styles square off to become the top contender to challenge WWE Champion Dean Ambrose for the title at Backlash. Other featured matches were the tag team qualifiers that saw The Ascension take on The Usos, while Breezango clashed with American Alpha. The event was aired from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, on 23 August.

The Ascension vs The Usos (Tag Team Title Tournament Match)

Jey and Jimmy Uso advanced to the next stage of the tag team tournament. Jimmy Uso carried out a big splash from the top for the win.

Breezango vs American Alpha (Tag Team Title Tournament Match)

Chad Gable and Jason Jordan won with the Grand Amplitude. The American Alpha advanced to the semi-finals, where the duo could fight The Usos or one of the four teams yet to fight in the tag team tournament.

Dolph Ziggler vs AJ Styles

The two went at each other from the start. The match saw Ziggler and Styles go back and forth for the finish. WWE Champion Dean Ambrose was on commentary for the match. In the end Styles came out on top with a superkick followed by the Styles Clash. Styles will face Ambrose at Backlash for the title.

Becky Lynch vs Alexa Bliss

The two wrestlers went at each other from the start with Natalya and Naomi on commentary. Bliss took control of the match initially but Becky came back with the flying firearm on Bliss. However, Bliss countered and bombed her for a close two count. In the end, Becky won with the Disarm Her.

Carmella vs Nikki Bella

Nikki Bella made her first official SmackDown roster debut before her fight against Carmella. As Renee Young was interviewing Bella about her successful return from a serious neck injury at Sunday night's SummerSlam, Carmella sneaked in from behind and carried out the Bella Buster. The match was then cancelled.
