Right-wing writer Peter Hitchens has never been a stranger to controversy. The Mail on Sunday columnist and author took time to speak to IBTimes UK on a range of issues affecting modern British politics, chiding the Conservative party as useless and saying that the more extreme Ukip were merely a nuisance party with no hope of achieving power.

He is most frustrated by what he sees as a complete lack of power among British polticians whilst the UK remains part of the EU. Any debate on immigration, he says, is pointless because Britain does not have any control over its own borders, and he argues that until we leave the European Union we will not have any say over who is allowed to come to the country.

With the three main political parties agreeing plans for state regulation of the press following the findings of the Leveson Inquiry, Hitchens acknowledges that while the media can sometimes make mistakes, they are an important counterbalance to the cynicism of British politics.

He goes on to quote one of America's founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson, who said: "Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter".
