Police have named the suspect to the earlier shooting at a cinema in Denver as James Holmes a 24 year old white American. Officials believe Holmes killed 14 people including a six year old child. A three month old baby is among the 40 seriously injured.

This footage shows the moment Police surrounded Home's apartment before evacuating the building. Armed police are perched on the top of police vans.

Police vehicles then surrounded Holmes's Toyota car to check for explosives. The parking lot was closed off and Bomb disposal teams brought in as a precaution.

This footage shot just outside the cinema shows police cars everywhere. Alex Milano who was at the Batman film premiere described the attack and the harrowing moment he heard about a little girl's death.

"A cop came walking through the front door before everyone was cleared up and everything was completely under control. The cop came walking through the door with a little girl in his arms and she wasn't moving. I had heard another witness who was in my theatre, someone who I was talking to before the movie we were waiting in line for she was on the phone and the really messed up part for me was she told whoever she was talking to that she saw bullet holes in the little girl's back."

Police spokesman Frank Fania said the suspect, thought to be in his early 20s, did not resist arrest. The man was carrying a knife, a rifle, a handgun when arrested and one other gun was recovered from the theatre, he said. The gunman was also wearing a bulletproof vest.
