Social network site Facebook is considered to be a contender for the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.

Facebook is the world's largest social network with 1.15 billion monthly users as of September 2013. It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg who co-founded the company in a Harvard dorm room in 2004.

The company went public in May 2012 in a rocky Initial Public Offering (IPO), but the stock price rebounded in 2013, selling above $50 dollars for the first time in September.

Facebook has been seen as a valuable political tool in the Middle East's Arab Spring, one of the social networks which has helped people to stay in contact and organise demonstrations.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced in Oslo on Friday (October 11).
