Former England star John Barnes has said that Wayne Rooney is England's most important player, and that the Manchester United striker must start if the Three Lions are to have any hope of progressing in Brazil.

Ahead of the start of the 2014 World Cup, there has been talk of Rooney being dropped for more in-form talents such as Adam Lallana and Ross Barkley, but Barnes, who won 79 caps for England, has said that the 28-year-old is vital to Roy Hodgson's hopes of progressing out of a difficult group that contains Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica.
