Shares in British banks were mixed on the FTSE 100 in morning trading, following gains in yesterday's session.

Optimism that the global economy may be recovering helped shares yesterday, today however focus is likely to turn towards data on U.S. jobs, due out at 13:30 British time.

By 09:35 shares in Lloyds Banking Group were down 0.48 per cent to 66.24 pence per share and Barclays shares fell 1.16 per cent to 271.75 pence per share.

However RBS saw its shares rise 1.32 per cent to 42.10 pence per share and HSBC shares increased 0.82 per cent to 673.00 pence per share.

Overall the FTSE 100 fell 0.08 per cent to 5,762.84.
