Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has urged David de Gea to snub Real Madrid and continue at Old Trafford.

The Spain international has one year left on his contract and Louis van Gaal has earlier confirmed the 20-times English champions have handed a new deal to their goalkeeper. The 24-year-old has refused to commit his future to Red Devils.

The Daily Mail claims De Gea wants to join Real and has already said goodbye to his United teammates. However, no deal has been agreed between the Premier League giants and the Spanish capital club.

Schmeichel, who won the treble with United during 1998/99 season has advised the stopper to sign a new contract with his current employers. The Dane believes De Gea can go on to become a club legend, if he decides to continue in England.

"I would be upset if he left this summer because I'm certain he could go on to make multiple hundreds of appearances for United - and end up winning more medals than me," Schmeichel told The Sun.

"There is no reason I can see why he wouldn't be successful if he stayed for the rest of his career."

Meanwhile, the 51-year-old said he would have fought "tooth and nail" to keep De Gea at Old Trafford. Schmeichel has advised Van Gaal to give the Spaniard everything he desires in order to put the speculations surrounding his future to bed.

"Whatever David would want in a new contract, if I were Van Gaal, I would fight tooth and nail to keep him happy in Manchester," he explained.

"Let's face it, the number of games where David saved United three points or one point is the reason why they were fourth in the table. He has just been unbelievable," the former United goalkeeper concluded.

The United manager has admitted he has been left angry with the ongoing saga surrounding the former Atletico Madrid man's future.
