A Muslim group today staged a protest against the sale and consumption of alcohol by marching through Brick Lane, one of the most popular nightlife spots in east London.

The Shariah Project claim that drinking or selling alcohol is sinful under Islamic law, and causes problems such as anti-social behaviour.

Police were out in force after politicians in the borough condemned the event as 'provocative'. Whilst the march itself had little impact on those around Brick Lane, it does highlight the tensions that exist between communities in parts of the capital.
