Here we play tribute to his career with the best lines from his most memorable movie roles.
Die Hard, as Hans Gruber
"I wanted this to be professional. Efficient, adult, co-operative, not a lot to ask. Alas, your Mr. Takagi did not see it that way, so he won't be joining us for the rest of his life."
Dogma, as Metatron
"Anyone who isn't dead or from another plane of existence would do well to cover their ears right about now."
Truly Madly Deeply, as Jamie
"I really, truly, madly, passionately, remarkably, deliciously... juicily love you."
Galaxy Quest, as Alexander Dane
"Quellek... by Grabthar's hammer... by the Suns of Worvan... you shall be... avenged."
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as Marvin the Paranoid Android
Marvin: "I've been communicating with the ship."
Ford: "What did it say?"
Marvin: "It hates me."
Love Actually, as Harry
Harry: Tell me, exactly, how long it is that you've been working here?
Sarah: Two years, seven months, three days and, I suppose, what... two hours?
Harry: And how long have you been in love with Karl, our enigmatic chief designer?
Sweeney Todd, as Judge Turpin
"You see, sir, a man infatuate with love, her ardent and eager slave. So fetch the pomade and pumice stone and lend me a more seductive tone, a sprinkling perhaps of French cologne, but first, sir, I think... a shave."
Harry Potter, as Professor Severus Snape
"Weasley's wand causes devastation with the simplest spells. We'll be sending Potter to the hospital wing in a matchbox."
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, as the Sheriff of Nottingham
"Wait a minute. Robin Hood steals money from my pocket, forcing me to hurt the public, and they love him for it?"
"That's it then. Cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers and orphans, no more merciful beheadings, and call off Christmas."
Bottle Shock, as Steven Spurrier
"'Wine is sunlight, held together by water.' The poetic wisdom of the Italian physicist, philosopher, and stargazer, Galileo Galilei. It all begins with the soil, the vine, the grape. The smell of the vineyard – like inhaling birth. It awakens some ancestral, some primordial... anyway, some deeply imprinted, and probably subconscious place in my soul."
