EA has confirmed the dates for its Mirror's Edge Catalyst closed beta, revealing it will take place across five days from 22 – 26 April on PS4, Xbox One and PC. The beta will focus on the open free-roaming element of the game and its multiplayer component.

"As with any beta, the experience will not be the same as the final product," reads the official announcement. "The Closed Beta is a chance for us to gather your valuable feedback and test the Social Play and online systems before launch. We know that as community members, you will have invaluable feedback on the game and we look forward to your comments and reaction when the Closed Beta starts."

Of those who registered for the beta, some will be deemed "Frontrunners" and receive their beta code on 22 April, while others will have to wait for 23 April.

A developer diary was released to coincide with the announcement (embedded below), revealing more about the "Social Play" aspect – basically amounting to time trials, races and leaderboards for side missions, with ghosts of other player's runs. Players will also be able to place what are effectively geo-tags in the game world and challenge players to find them.

Catalyst is the follow-up to 2008's cult classic original, and introduces an open world aspect – acting as a sort of hub for players to explore, indulge in the game's multiplayer aspect, find side missions and collectables, and complete the game's core story missions.

"Mirror's Edge Catalyst is not only about the story of Faith and her fight against oppression. We've also designed the city of Glass as an opportunity for you to connect with friends and compare skills with other Runners," continued the statement.

YouTuber Arekkz was given the chance to play the beta content ahead of time and posted his impressions on YouTube, if you're after a fans-perspective on what to expect.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst is set for release on 26 May in Europe and 24 May in North America.
