Th US student "re-enacting" scenes from bondage flick 50 Shades of Grey in his dormitory has been charged with sexual assault.
Mohammad Hossain, 19, allegedly flogged a young woman in his room at the University of Illinois in Chicago.
Police say he told them he was copying scenes from the hit film, in which arrogant billionaire Christian Grey takes his submissive partner Anastasia Steele on an exploratory journey into the world of S&M.
The woman, who is also aged 19, agreed to come to his room and to strip to her underwear. Hossain then allegedly tied up her hands and feet with belts and stuffed a neck tie in to her mouth.
Covering her eyes with a knitted cap, he proceed to whip her with another belt until she "began shaking her head and crying," said police.
But Hossain carried upon whipping her in spite of her protests, and in ignorance of the use of a so-called "safe word", the protocol under which such activities are normally arranged.
The young women managed to wriggle free of the restraints, but even then Hossain continued to sexually assault her, it was claimed.
She eventually fled the scene and reported the incident to campus police, who arrested the Hossain.
The Chicago Tribune reported Hossain was inspired by 50 Shades of Grey.
"How can someone involved in all that let a movie persuade him to do something like this?" asked judge Adam Bourgeois Jr.
Hossain has claimed he thought the sex was consensual. He was remanded in custody on bail of $500,000.
