Lenovo to release Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for its smartphones in June 2016 Reuters

Lenovo plans to release Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for its latest range of smartphones in June 2016. The company is also working on releasing a similar update for the affordable K3 Note, A7000 and A7000 Plus in September.

An Android upgrade matrix page shows that Lenovo could release the update for the mid-range Vibe S1 and Vibe P1 in June. All the five smartphones originally run on the Android Lollipop operating system. Delay in releasing Android updates is quite common among Chinese smartphone vendors due to their deep level of customisation, but Lenovo appears to be taking a really long time.

As Google generally releases a new Android version at its I/O developer conference in June, Android N would be released at the time when Lenovo smartphones receive Android Marshmallow. However, the update could be rescheduled to an earlier date as the "Release Date" column in the matrix "is subject to change".

Lenovo did not respond to an email seeking a comment. The Android Marshmallow update is expected to be available as an over-the-air (OTA) update and would bring features like Google Now on Tap and Doze mode in addition to a new version of Vibe UI.

Huawei recently announced that its Honor range of smartphones will receive an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow in February. The new Android version is also coming to flagship offerings by HTC, Sony and Samsung in the coming months.
