An Iraq war veteran has pleaded guilty to attempting to hire a member of the Klu Klux Klan to kill his black neighbour who he suspected of raping his wife.

Allen Morgan, 29, of Munford in Tennessee, admitting to asking undercover FBI agents who were posing as KKK members to kill registered sex offender Clifford Mosley .

Morgan admitted he offered a watch, a necklace and a gun as payment and provided a detailed brief for Mosley's torture and murder. According to court documents, Morgan described how he wanted his neighbour "hung from a tree like a deer" after having his "d**k cut off" and "gutted".

Morgan, who allegedly suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, is due to be sentenced on 27 February. He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail and a $250,000 (£150,000) fine.

Jocelyn Samuels, acting asst attorney general for the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, said: "The defendant attempted to arrange the brutal murder of his neighbour as vengeance for a perceived wrong.

"The Justice Department will prosecute with vigour those who seek violent vigilantism.

"This defendant's effort to solicit a murder for hire is a federal crime. The prosecution here was swift and the punishment will be in a federal penitentiary. Future wrongdoers are on notice that we vigorously prosecute these crimes."

Morgan was arrested last August after he arranged to meet up with an undercover FBI agent posing as a member of the KKK. The FBI agent said he will bring a second Klan member to assist with the plot.

The men arranged to meet three days later. Morgan told the agents he had already confronted Mosley and had fired several shots at the ground in order to scare him.

Morgan then described how he wanted his neighbour to die a "slow and painful death". He added that, as he was a disabled veteran, he would not be pay the fake KKK member with money so offered the watch, necklace and gun instead.

He was arrested after he gave the fake klansman a map of his neighbour's home to help carry out the attack.

Mosley, 40, was convicted in 2009 for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.
