A seven-year-old boy in China has survived jumping out of a tenth floor window while using a umbrella as a parachute.

The boy was reported to be attempting to mimic a cartoon he had just seen on television when he jumped out of the apartment window in the city of Suzhou, in Jiangsu province, eastern China.

The boy, who has not been named, is said to have broken his fall by jumping into power lines before hitting the ground.

The boy suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries as a result of his fall. Doctors told the boy's family the seven-year-old had copied a cartoon character he had seen using an umbrella as a parachute.

Unconfirmed photos from Chinese media appear to show the child lying on the pavement with a large red umbrella. His mother is also said to have collapsed when she saw her child lying injured on the ground and had to be comforted by passers-bys.

A similar incident also occurred in China in March after a five-year-old girl in Urumqi jumped from an 11th floor window balcony holding an umbrella. She was left seriously injured after landing on a fourth-floor balcony.
