The amount of people on Facebook has hit ten digits, as CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company now has more than one billion people using the social network site each month.

The one billion milestone was reached at 12:45pm Pacific time on 14 September, eight years and eight months since the site was created in Zuckerberg's Harvard dorm room.

That now means that if Facebook was a country, it would be the third largest in the world, only behind China and India.

Zuckerberg, who was in Russia earlier this week, spoke to students at Moscow State University about the rapid expansion of the site.

"One thing that's pretty crazy now is that in the last year, 200 million people have signed up for Facebook. And that's a huge amount, right, for one year. And it took us five years to get to the first 100 million, and it took us a whole year to get to the first million, so these things, I mean, have this way of accelerating over time, if you focus on them and build a really good foundation, but even that takes time. It takes a really long amount of time to get there."

If Facebook is to continue to expand, the company will have to take off in countries likes Russia and China where they are not the number one social media site.
