The winners of the ZSL Animal Photography Prize 2014 have been announced, with an image of a panther chameleon taking the top spot.

Taken by Simone Sbaraglia, the image shows the chameleon against a jungle foliage as it snares its prey – a moment he said he waited days for.

"I spent a significant amount of time trying to learn the animal's behaviour to try and anticipate this moment. After several days I was able to achieve the picture that I was looking for," he said.

"I hope that when people see it they are amazed by this animal, connect with nature and learn to love and respect it."

The winning photographs will now be put on display at London Zoo. They were chosen by an expert panel of judges, including TV presenter Kate Humble and Bill Oddie.

Other images include a close-up of an orangutan and a gentoo penguin playing in the waves.

Sarah Barron, ZSL's photography exhibition project manager, said: "The winning pictures in the 2014 ZSL Animal Photography Prize are quite simply some of the most incredible images we've seen yet."
