A man has been charged with murder following the death of a Serco prison guard who was assaulted outside London's Blackfriars court.

Lorraine Barwell, 54, was attacked after she was escorting a prisoner between the court and a waiting van parked in the yard in south-east London.

The attack left the grandmother on a life-support machine for four days until it was reportedly switched off by her family.

Humphrey Burke, 22, of no fixed abode, has now been charged with murder. He is due to appear before Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court via video link on 10 July to face the charges.

Baljit Ubhey OBE, chief crown prosecutor for CPS London, said: "Burke now stands charged with a criminal offence and has the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."
