Shares in British banks were up on the FTSE 100 in morning trading ahead of key economic data due out this week.

The Office for National Statistics is due to release data on inflation tomorrow, followed by unemployment statistics on Wednesday.

By 09:40 shares in Lloyds Banking Group were up 0.79 per cent to 73.98 pence per share, RBS shares increased 0.08 per cent to 47.65 pence per share, Barclays shares rose 0.64 per cent to 299.15 pence per share and HSBC shares climbed 0.68 per cent to 662.70 pence per share.

Overall the FTSE 100 was up 0.21 per cent to 5,669.45.
