Metropolitan Police detectives investigating the death of a 39-year old man in Woolwich on Tuesday, (29 December, have charged 45-year-old Tadeus Sareiko with murder. He has been remanded in custody and will appear in front of Bromley Magistrates Court today.

The victim was found critically injured with a wound to his head at a block of flats at Jessup Close in the town in south-east London. Police and paramedics were sent to the scene to find the victim unconscious where his condition deteriorated and he was finally pronounced dead.

A later post-mortem examination gave a cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head and chest.Detectives from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command, led by Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Gwyn, investigated the incident.

A 46-year old unnamed man who was arrested in connection with the incident has been released from custody by the Met after no further action was taken.

Second Greenwich murder

This has not been the only violent assault in the London Borough of Greenwich over the festive season. On 27 December, Metropolitan Police arrested 52-year-old Mottingham man Chris Freun in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 64-year-old man at Luxfield Road in Greenwich on Boxing Day (26 December).

Freun was charged with murder. Police said that the victim and suspect were known to each other but are not related.
