President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama marked Star Wars Day with a dance-off at the White House alongside R2-D2 and stormtroopers. Mark Ronson's Uptown Funk, cited by the First Lady as her favourite song, was the soundtrack – presumably deemed more danceable than the original John Williams theme tune.

Star Wars Day officially started on 4 May 2011 at the Toronto Underground Cinema, with the date, officially written as May 4th, chosen as a pun on the Jedi catchphrase "may the force be with you". The festivities, which were produced by Sean Ward and Alice Quinn, included the Original Trilogy Trivia Game Show, a costume contest with celebrity judges, and the web's best tribute films, mash-ups, parodies and remixes on the big screen.
