Liverpool have agreed a deal in principle for the signing of left-back Alberto Moreno from La Liga club Sevilla.

"Liverpool can confirm they have reached an agreement with Sevilla for the transfer of Spain international full-back Alberto Moreno," a statement on the Reds' official website read.

"The Reds will proceed with the formalities of finalising the deal for the 22-year-old over the coming days and will make no further announcement until it is complete."

The Merseyside club have been after the Spanish international all summer, and now one of the longest running transfer sagas has reached a successful conclusion, with Moreno set to arrive in England in the very near future.

Moreno had a fabulous season with Sevilla and played a key role in their run to the Europa League title during the previous campaign.

However, in Tuesday's Super Cup encounter against Real Madrid, which the latter won 2-0, Moreno was left out of the squad pending his imminent departure to Liverpool. And you could see his disappointment at leaving his hometown club after the final whistle, when he broke down while bidding farewell to his team-mates.

The arrival of the 22-year-old defender will signal Liverpool's eighth summer signing, and it will not be the last as Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that he is looking to add more depth to his squad.

"Across the board we still want to add a little bit more depth to what we have. We hope to do some more business," Rodgers told Liverpool's official site.

According to the Daily Mail, the Reds have negotiated a fee in the region of £12m with Sevilla, much lower than the initial demand of £16m.

Tottenham were also interested in signing Moreno earlier in the summer, but their interest cooled after they beat Liverpool to the signing of Ben Davies from Swansea City. The Spanish defender has always been Rodgers' number one target for the left-back position.
