While PlayStation fans may have been disappointed that Sony didn't actually show off the new console hardware at teh launch event in the Manhattan Center last night, they will have been a lot happier with the list of premium games announced during the two hour long presentation.

Sony trotted out developers and executives from all the major studios such as Ubisot, Capcom, Square Enix, and most surprisingly Halo-creator Bungie and until-now PC-only Blizzard.

PlayStation 4: Sony's doing a lot of things right

With the next-generation Xbox likely to be revealed sometime later this year, securing high-profile AAA titles is paramount to the success of Sony's console, and from what we've seen so far, it's got it spot on.

Below we've detailed the top games which were announced for the PlayStation 4

  • Killzone: Shadow Fall (Geurilla Games)

Speaking at the Sony's presentation, Guerilla Games managing director Herman Hulst revealed the the next game in the Killzone series. As you can see in the lengthy trailer below, the game is set in a huge futuristic city. The game looks beautiful, with photo-realistic people and beautifully rendered surroundings.

The game is set to be one of three Ps4 launch titles, whenever that is going to be. Hulst said that the game is "a story about the loss of home, the search for a new home and the lengths to which people will go to survive."

  • Watch Dogs (Ubisoft)

The second of the official trio of launch title's Ubisoft's Watch Dogs has been in development since 2010 and is built around information warfare, data being interconnected and the world's increasing use of technology.

The game is set in an alternate reality version of Chicago, Illinois, which is one of many cities to feature a supercomputer known as a "CtOS" (Central Operating System). The system controls almost every piece of technology in the city, and contains information on all of the city's residents and activities which can be used for various purposes.

The trailer shows how protagonist Aiden Pierce will try and "invade everyone's privacy" and can use any device tied to CtOS as a weapon against it.

  • Drive Club (Evolution Studios)

Creators of the MindStorm franchise, Evolution Studios told the assembled guests in New York it had been working on the title for nine years, and only the technical advances made by the PS4 would allow them to create what they wanted.

The final official PS4 launch title, the racing sim will centre on the person, with each player joining virtual clubs, before racing the most realistic cars ever created in the most well-known locations around the world. Evolution studios said they went "borderline insane" with the amount detail, down to creating individual strands for the carbon fibre parts of cars.

  • Destiny (Bungie)

One of the surprises of the PS4 launch was the presence of the Bungie team, who confirmed their game Destiny will be released on PS3 and PS4. This has been a major coup for Sony as Bungie, creator of the Halo series, has previously stuck to the Xbox.

Destiny's developers also divulged that they will release exclusive content for Sony's new gaming console.

Destiny is set seven hundred years into the future in a post-apocalyptic setting. In a universe where humans had spread and colonised other solar systems in the Milky Way, an event known as "the Collapse" saw the mysterious dissolution of these colonies and left mankind teetering on the brink of extinction.

  • inFamous: Second Son (Sucker Punch)

Nate Fox, from Seattle studio Sucker Punch introduced this game at the Sony event and it looks like to be going head-to-head with Watch Dogs as the Big Brother game of the PlayStation 4. A trailer posted online, had the following plot synopsis attached:

"Surrounded by a society that fears them, superhumans are ruthlessly hunted down and caged by the Department of Unified Protection. When Delsin Rowe discovers his powers he's forced to run, searching for other superhumans in order to save those he loves from the oppressive D.U.P. now hot on his tail. The choices he makes along the way change the future of everyone around him."

"Our security comes at a high price - our freedom," said Fox. But imagine if you developed superhuman abilities that turned you into a "living, breathing weapon". Would you have the courage to fight for your freedom?

So a mixture of X-Men and Brazil then. Sounds intriguing.

  • The Witness (Jonathon Blow)

While most of the games unveiled at the presentation were loud, bombastic shooting/running/driving type of games, The Witness set a decidedly different tone. The new game from creator of Braid - Jonathon Blow - The witness will se players explore an island solving puzzles to unravel additional areas. Blow suggest the game will take about 25 hours to complete, and will release for PC, iOS and PS4 simultaneously.

Blow described the The Witness as a "game about epiphany" highlighting just how different it is to the rest of the PS4 line-up so far. Reminiscent of Myst, the island features odd-looking puzzles and otherworldly objects. It's an odd one, but variety is the spice of life and The Witness offers a nice balance to the rest of the line-up.

  • Knack (Mark Cerny)

Having worked on titles like Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank its not surprising to see Mark Cerny return to the platform genre he knows so well. Cerny was also the lead system architect on the PlayStation 4, so he better than anyone else should know how to get the most out of the system.

In terms of plot, well we'll let you make up your own mind:

"Mankind must turn to an unlikely hero named Knack to protect them from a dangerous new threat. Thanks to the power of mysterious ancient relics, Knack can transform into a gigantic fighting machine with immense power and strength."

  • Deep Down (Capcom)

This is the working title of a new IP from Japanese developer Capcom, and uses the company's new Panta Rhei engine which is seeking to take advantage of everything the PS4 will have to offer.

The trailer was certainly one of the highlights of the presentation last night, with the photo-realistic humans standing out. The game looks to take place in a Dungeons & Dragons style environment with a heavily armoured soldier taking on a fire-breathing dragon in the short trailer.

Some are linking Deep Down to the Dragon's Dogma franchise from Capcom, it also looks a lot like Dark Souls. At the end of the trailer you get a glimpse of the social integration from Sony when the player asks a friend for help with a gear drop to help beat a monster.

  • Final Fantasy (Square Enix)

Square Enix took to the stage to show off its new graphics engine which will take advantage of the power of the PS4, but it didn't have any new titles to confirm. Except, that is, for the fact that a new, as-yet-untitled Final Fantasy game will be coming at E3 this year. Final Fantasy brand director Shinji Hashimoto asked Final Fantasy fans to be "excited for E3 this year."

  • Diablo 3 (Blizzard)

Like Bungie, Blizzard Entertainment had been absent from the PlayStation platform for a long time and it was a surprise to hear them announcing a "strategic partnership" with the Japanese company. The first fruits of that partnership will be the launch of Diablo III on the PlayStation 4 as well as the PlayStation 3.

While this in itself is nothing that exciting, the prospect of all future Blizzard titles making being available on PlayStation is, and we're looking forward to seeing what this "strategic partnership" holds in store for gamers as the PS4 launch approaches.
