North Yorkshire Police have named the man who was found dead in the River Foss in York as 63-year-old Leslie Bell.
A member of the public spotted the man in the river, which runs near Layerthorpe, on Tuesday.
Police were alerted to the incident at 1130 GMT and called in assistance from North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue who launched a boat. The body was then recovered by the fire boat crew just after 1240 GMT.
A post mortem examination has been completed and the inquest is expected to open and adjourn next week.
His death is not being treated as suspicious.
A police statement said: "Police enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding Mr Bell's death remain ongoing.
"Although it is still not known how Mr Bell ended up in the river, officers say there is no evidence to suggest the death was suspicious."
