Furious 7, the latest in the Fast & Furious film series, has become the film with the ninth biggest opening weekend in US box office history.

The film is also the highest grossing movie of 2015 as of now, and it has helped the franchise to propel itself into the billion-dollar territory.

According to Box Office Mojo, the Fast and Furious franchise has now grossed just under $1.2bn in the US. However, it is still ranked 14th among film franchises that collected the most in history.

Overall, the Marvel Cinematic Universe series, with superhero films that include Iron Man, The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World, is the most successful movie franchise, grossing a grand total of $2.95bn at the North American box office.

Harry Potter comes in number two with $2.4 billion, while Star Wars rounds off the top three with $1.92bn.

The James Bond and Batman series come in at number four and number five with collections of $1.91bn and $1.90bn, respectively.
