For many years now, videogames have been trying to recreate the world around us in ever greater virtual detail, but one game is looking to take this one step further by turing the streets, parks, buildings and landmarks around us into a game world.

Ingress takes the idea of an massively multiplayer online game and transplants it into the real world. The game sees players join one of two factions - the Enlightened or the Resistance - who are battling for control of a mysterious energy source that has recently been discovered.

The game is the brainchild of John Hanke, the map who helped create Google Earth and Google Maps, who believes Ingress is something completely new.
