However, the average netizen might be wondering who the rising YouTube stars are, and what it is they do that makes them so famous.

IBTimes UK takes a look at the most popular YouTube stars that you may not have heard about.

PewDiePie (Language Warning)

PewDiePie is currently the most popular and highest earning YouTuber in the world. At the time this article was published, the Swedish-born personality has nearly 32 million subscribers to his channel and over 2,000 videos.

PewDiePie, real name Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, specializes in 'let's play' videos, in which he overlays a video of his humourous reactions and commentary while playing a videogame. He has become a fan favourite with his comical and sometimes hysterical reactions to horror games.

As of this month, his channel is the highest viewed on YouTube, with 6.2 billion views, and his annual income adds up to more than $4m (£2.5m).

Jenna Marbles

Jenna Mourey (aka Jenna Marbles for her channel), is an American entertainer and personality who lives in Los Angeles with her two dogs Mr Marbles and Kermit.

Marbles publishes one video on her channel weekly, but that hasn't stopped her from becoming one of the most popular characters on the site.

She currently has over 14 million subscribers and publishes videos on a variety subjects, with a comical twist. Her video on 'How to trick people into thinking you're good looking', had 5.3 million views in its first week and now has over 59 million views.

The Slow Mo Guys

The Slow Mo Guys is a channel which focusses on slow motion video capture of various pranks and stunts, run by Gavin Free and Dan Gruchy.

The pair use Vision Research Phantom high-speed cameras to capture their videos at over 10,000 frames a second.

Their channel has over 4.5 million subscribers and their most popular video to date is of them popping a 6ft water balloon, which has over 65 million views.

This couple Jesse Wellens and his girlfriend Jeana, have two channels to log their daily antics and showcase their different versus competitions with each other.

The pair shot to fame after Wellens tricked his girlfriend into eating a spoonful of cinnamon, while he filmed it. She then retaliated by smacking him in the head with a pan.

A prank war then ensued and the pair now have just under 6.5 million subscribers to their Prank vs Prank channel.

Zoella

Zoe Sugg is an English fashion and beauty vlogger (video blogger), best known under her internet handle of Zoella.

She currently has over 6.2 million subscribers to her channel and this year won the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award for UK Favourite Vlogger and the Teen Choice Award for Choice Web Star: Fashion/Beauty.

Her most popular video is 'How To: My Quick and Easy Hairstyles' with over 7.3 million views.

Michelle Phan

Michelle Phan is an American make-up artist and entrepreneur who is famous for her incredible make-up and special effect tutorials in which she shows viewers how to create various different looks, from Zombie Barbie to 1920's Flapper Girl.

Phan currently has over 7 million subscribers to her channel, and won two Teen Choice Awards this year for her videos.

Disney Collector

Disney Collector is the child-friendly channel of an anonymous Brazilian woman who opens, assembles and plays with Disney toys, whilst providing a commentary.

The channel is a favourite of parents who like to put her videos on to calm and entertain their children.

She currently has over 2.5 million subscribers and her most popular video about Disney princess sparkle Play-Doh, has over 95 million views.

Epic Rap Battles of History (Language Warning)

Epic Rap Battles of History is a channel created by Peter Shukoff and Lloyd Ahlquist and features a series of videos where figures in popular culture (past and present, real and fictional), go up against one another in rap battles to prove who is the better one in their field.

Examples of their videos include Darth Vader vs Hitler, Miley Cyrus vs Joan of Arc, and Donald Trump vs Ebenezer Scrooge.

The channel has over 11 million subscribers and previously mentioned YouTubers Jenna Marbles and Jesse Wellens have appeared in their videos.

The Yogscast

The Yogscast are a large group of UK based YouTube personalities, who focus on making gaming content.

Their main channel Yogscast Lewis & Simon is run by the two co-founders of the business, although many of the people employed at the company cross over onto each other's channels to play games together.

Yogscast Lewis & Simon became the first channel in the UK to reach one billion views and currently has over 7 million subscribers.

For the past three years they have run a charity livestreaming event at Christmas time, where they play games every evening in December and give their viewers special rewards in return for donating money to charity.

Grav3yard Girl

Bunny Meyer (aka Grav3yard Girl) is an American fashion/beauty vlogger and internet personality.

However, the most unique thing about her channel are her 'Does This Thing Really Work?' videos, where she tests out 'As Seen on TV' products.

She currently has just under 4 million subscribers to her channel and her most popular video is 'Ice Cream Magic: Does This Thing Really Work?' with over 6.1 million views.
