Overview

World Number seven Tomas Berdych made it to the semi-finals by beating Jerzy Janowicz in the quarters in three sets, having lost the first set through a tie breaker.

However, he showed enough mental strength to come back into the game and broke Janowicz to win the next two sets, 6-2 6-4. The Czech international has a brilliant opportunity to win the Rotterdam Open this time around with prime competition, Andy Murray, having crashed out of the tournament in the semis.

Berdych has been in brilliant form this season as he joined the likes of Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic to progress into the semi-finals of each of the grand slams in a calendar year.

However, his progress was stunted on all occasions and the player will be hoping that with his competition eased due to the exits of the top two seeds, he can raise his game and claim the title.

Ernests Gulbis has been in great form thus far, beating Denis Istomin in the first round and followed that up with a comprehensive win over Grigor Dimitrov in the next round. However, he kept his best for the last as he defeated number two seed Juan del Potro in the round of 8 set himself up for a semi-final clash.

Gulbis was in top form against his Argentinian counterpart, making decisive forehands while del Potro was forced to check his shots owing to a wrist injry, something proved the difference between the two at the end.
