Overview

Ahead of the final day of the Davis Cup quarterfinal fixtures, Italy trail Great Britain (GB) 1-2 after three rubbers.

Ward was the first in action for GB and lost to Fognini in the first rubber. The 27-year-old put up a strong fight in the first set but lost, 4-6. He fought hard in the second set to win, 6-2, against the world number 13, levelling the game at 1-1.

But the Italian outplayed Ward in the subsequent sets, 6-4, 6-1, to triumph in the opening rubber of the quarterfinal on Friday.

Meanwhile, Seppi failed to build the 1-0 lead and suffered a defeat to world number eight, Andy Murray in straight sets.

The 30-year-old Italian lost, 4-6, 5-7, 3-6, in a match that was continued on Saturday after being halted due to poor light the previous day.

Murray teamed up with Colin Fleming for the doubles rubber and outplayed Fognini and Simone Bolelli, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, to help GB go one step away from booking their place in the semi-final.

Ward will be hoping that Murray can pull off a victory against Fognini in the fourth rubber; thus cancelling out the need for a deciding fifth rubber.

Head-to-Head

Seppi and Ward have never faced each other in any competition.
