On Bashid McLean's first appearance in court for allegedly murdering his mother and chopping her body into pieces, the 23-year-old New Yorker had to wear garbage bags... because he kept urinating on himself.

Police reports claim McLean planned the murder, including ways to dispose of the body and also committed one other truly gruesome act - he took a photograph of himself and the mutilated head of his mother, with his mobile phone. A law enforcement official revealed the gruesome image was just one of several horrific images on the device.

"I lost sleep over it. Just sheer inhumanity. It's horrible what he did to her," the source told the New York Post.

McLean is believed to be mentally ill and is being held on suicide watch. He told the judge that his mother was terminally ill and he was trying to help her. However, it remains unclear what Byrd's illness, if any, was. There were several other outbursts during his court appearance, including protestations he had done nothing wrong. As a result, the court ruled that bail not be allowed.

Defence attorney Jerry Iannece stressed his client was undergoing psychological evaluations. It is unknown, at this point, if McLean's seven-year-old brother Nasyr, who has Down's Syndrome, was also at home during the crime.

McLean also created a page on MySpace called "Kill the b**** Tanya", according to Cassandra McLean, Tanya's sister. And three weeks ago, he apparently also took to Twitter and wrote "Tanya must die".

His sister, Porsche Lovett, told Daily News her brother was not at all sorry for what he did. She said: "He looked me in the eyes and told me he did nothing wrong when he killed her. I don't know who he is."

Meanwhile, an unnamed relative told local site DNAInfo that although Byrd was sometimes scared of her son, she loved him: "He's acted out in violent ways before, but I never thought he could do something like this. Not in a million years."

"She was a loving mother and very devoted to her son. That's what she lived for. That's her joy in life," Byrd's sister Cassandra McLean said.
