Police in Colombia have arrested three fake nuns trying to smuggle cocaine under their habits.

The "sisters" were stopped by customs and excise officers when they arrived on the Caribbean island of San Andres on a flight from Colombia's capital of Bogota.

Police captain Oscar Davila said the suspects immediately roused suspicions as they appeared nervous and the fabric of their outfits did not match that of traditional nuns' habits.

They were taken into custody when more than 6kg of cocaine was found on them. Each woman had more than 2kg of the Class A drug strapped to her legs.

The trio were said to have broken down in tears when they were caught and said that poverty had forced them into the crime.

They have all been jailed on drug trafficking charges.

San Andres is just off Nicaragua's coast and is part of a long-established smuggling route for cocaine from mainland Colombia.
