A family of eight people, including three children aged between four and six, have been found stabbed to death in the northern Mexico border city of Ciudad Juarez.

The dead - two men, three women and three children - were found tied up with a rope and their mouths covered with tape inside their home, according to Chihuahua state prosecutors.

Spokesman Arturo Sandoval said the eight were found on Sunday morning after they did not attend a Jehovah's Witness meeting and congregation members became worried.

According to some reports, a two-month-old baby, believed to have lived in the house, was not among the dead. It is still unclear whether it has survived or was taken away by the assailants.

Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso in Texas, was considered the world's most violent city due to a bloody war among drug cartels.

However, the murder rate declined since President Enrique Pena Nieto was elected last December. Around 10,000 people have been killed in the city since 2006.

In September, a gang of gunmen killed 10 people, including a six-year-old girl, in the area.
