Spanish champions Barcelona face a stern test of their mettle when they square off against Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon on 12 September.

Where to watch live

Kick off is set for 7.30pm BST. The game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports 3 HD.

Overview

Atletico Madrid have a 100% record going into their showdown with Barcelona after back-to-back wins over Las Palmas and Sevilla. The win over fellow Champions League club Sevilla was especially impressive, with goals from Koke, Gabi and Jackson Martinez handing Atletico a comfortable 3-0 victory at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium.

Diego Simeone's side will have to be at their tenacious best if they are to halt a four-match losing run against Spanish and European champions Barcelona. The 2013 La Liga winners have a near-full squad to choose from, with midfielder Tiago the only injury doubt.

Barcelona are yet to hit their stride this season, with a chastening 5-1 aggregate defeat in the Spanish Super Cup against Athletic Bilbao followed by back-to-back 1-0 league victories over Athletic and Malaga. Lionel Messi is yet to find the back of the net for the Catalan giants in La Liga this season, as is Neymar.

Defenders Dani Alves and Gerard Pique are out through injury and suspension, respectively, while Sergi Roberto is a doubt. Claudio Bravo is out with a calf injury, so Marc-Andre ter Stegen is likely to make his long-awaited La Liga debut.

What managers say

Diego Simeone: We had one of our best games on the road in recent times (against Sevilla). The result seemed to suggest we were far superior, but our opponents had a very competitive squad, one of the best in Spain, and we had a team that had confidence in taking their chances. The best thing was our high intensity.

Luis Enrique: We knew we were going to decide the game by the end, we were the superior side (against Malaga). We played a very complete match as we prepared during the week. I was always confident the team would win.
