Tottenham have been thoroughly schooled tonight. After making seven changes against a side who are still within touching distance of Bayern Munich, Mauricio Pochettino was asking for trouble. He got it, with Borussia Dortmund tearing through his side with ease. The return leg follows at White Hart Lane next week, but you feel this one is already over.

FULL TIME: Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Three minutes of added time remain.

Tottenham come forward again, looking for something to take back to north London but it comes to nothing as Trippier lifts a woeful ball in from the right that sails over the bar and out of play.

That's enough from Reus and Aubameyang tonight, they are off to be replaced by Kagawa and Ramos for the last few minutes.

That Onomah incident took place just outside the box but it did look like he was tripped by Hummels.

Tottenham have what looked to be a very decent penalty shout turned down as Onomah burst into the penalty area, but the referee didn't even consider it as he waved play on.

Dortmund and throwing attack after attack forward now. Again Castro wanders into acres of space down the inside left and tries to ping a cross in, but this time Wimmer stops it.

Tottenham and Mauricio Pochettino have been taught a real lesson here tonight. Yes, they are in the thick of a title challenge, but making seven changes for a clash against a team of this quality was only going to end one way.

Time for Kane. He's onto replace Son for the final 15 minutes of this match.

Dortmund nearly have a fourth after another wonderful passage of slick passing. Schmelzer is eventually picked out cutting in from the left and lifts the ball into the six yard area where Mkhitaryan runs onto the ball, but he lashes his effort wildly over the bar.

Son has what is probably Tottenham's best opening of the match in front of him, but can't get a decent shot off and instead rolls a tame one straight at the Dortmund goalkeeper.

Dortmund have a third and its a truly sublime goal. Aubameyang jinks past one challenge before sliding a ball out to Castro on the inside right. He clips a wonderful first time ball into the six yard area, threading it in between Wimmer and Alderweireld right onto the outstretched boot of Reus who thrashes it past Lloris. Excellent stuff.

Goal! Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Tottenham Hotspur (Marco Reus, 69)

Lamela picks up a yellow card moments after coming on for a late challenge on Wiegl.

Another change for Spurs, but still no Kane. Erik Lamela now enters the fray, replacing Eriksen.

Hummels nuts a cross from Son clear and Tottenham have a corner. Still no sign of Harry Kane, with the South Korea international now playing up front.

The introduction of Subotic was Tottenham's undoing there, no one really picked him up as he steamed into the box.

Dortmund have a second! From a short corner, Castro swings in a delightful ball what Subotic, just off the bench, meets with a firm header, knocking it over to the far post where Reus has slipped off his man to lash into the roof of the net. It was coming, and Tottenham are now in danger of letting this tie slip away from them.

Goal! Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Tottenham (Marco Reus, 59)

Also a change for Dortmund as Neven Subotic trots on for Bender.

A change for Tottenham sees Mousa Dembele brought on for Chadli.

Huge chance for a second for Dortmund as Mkhitaryan frees Aubameyang, who clips the ball over the onrushing Lloris. His effort is going wide but Castro can get on the end of it. He tries to clip it back on goal from an impossible angle and is denied by the outside of the post.

If you are just joining us, Squawka's heat mat from the first half should sum up how the first 45 went for you...

Reus dances his way in from the right and looking to play a one-two with Mkhitaryan. He gets the ball back and tries to batter it on goal but Alderweireld steps across to make the block.

And Dortmund get us back underway for the second half.

Aubameyang's goal is the difference at half time and Dortmund are firmly in control of the tie so far.

HALF TIME: Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Trippier is clutching his shoulder as he heads off the pitch but should be okay to come back on.

Trippier is now down in a heap after heavy fall after challenging for a high ball. Two minutes of time added on, but it may be a bit longer while the Spurs full-back gets treatment.

Just one minute (plus injury time) to play in the first half here. Spurs have been schooled a bit, here.

Dortmund swarm forward again with Mkhitaryan opting to take the shot on from outside the box, but it is charged down by Wimmer.

Chadli Marseille-turns his way past one challenge but runs into another as he drags the ball back. He had three men on him in that instance; Dortmund are relentless.

So close from Reus! He curls one up and over the wall but it is veering away from the top corner. Lloris didn't know that, however, he was rooted to the spot.

Reus stands over the resulting free kick from 25 yards out.

Schmelzer is now down in a heap after a heavy challenge from Tom Carroll, he is booked.

Tottenham try to respond immediately as Eriksen slides a pass into Son but he tries to jink his way past one too many, delaying his shot and allowing Hummels to step across and intercept.

Dortmund have a deserved opener! The ball is laid off for Schmelzer who scoops a beauty of a cross into the box where Aubameyang rises above his marker to place a precise header into the far corner.

Goal! Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur (Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 30)

Weigl cuts in from the left flank and tries his luck from the edge of the box, forcing the save from Lloris. The ball almost bobbles away from the Frenchman but he claims it at the second time of asking.

Carroll swings it in but Weidenfeller is off his line to catch.

Tottenham now get a bit of joy in the final third, forcing a corner which Carroll will take.

Hummels slides a wonderful pass through that takes four Spurs players out of the game but Lloris is alive to it, reading it all the way and getting there before Reus.

Durm is in acres of space down the right everytime Dortmund venture this forward. Aubameyang frees him with ease again but this timer Durm's cross is blocked for a corner.

Onomah is being forced to work hard with Spurs on the back foot but he is doing a decent job of it so far, harrying the opponent when they are in possession (which is a lot).

Alderweireld saves his side with a crucial last-ditch tackle but moments later Dortmund have the ball in the back of the net! Spurs fail to clear after that tackle and Mkhitaryan can smash one on goal from 25 yards out. It draws a terrific save from Lloris but Aubameyang to first to the rebound to slot home. There was a reason he was first to that, however, he was stood in an offside position.

Wonderful from Dortmund. Aubameyang skips past his marker and pings a ball out to Reus with the outside of his boot. He flings a cross into the box where the Gabon striker has continued his run, but he just misses the target under pressure from Tom Carroll and volleys over.

Dortmund zip the ball up the inside right flank again but this time Wimmer is alive to it and intercepts.

Two decent chances in the space of a minute for Dortmund. The first sees Gonzalo Castro fire wildly over the bar under pressure from Mason, the second, a much better opening with Aubameyang sliding a ball through for the onrushing fullback Durm, but his drags his effort wide.

a bit of miscommunication between Weidenfeller and Hummels with Onomah trying to put the latter under pressure but the skipper takes control of the situation, bringing the ball under control and ushers it away from danger.

It's been a bright start from both sides in the opening few minutes, lots of high pressing from both sides.

Christian Eriksen has the first effort of the match, shifting the ball onto his right foot before shooting on goal. but it is a comfortable enough save for Weidenfeller

And we are off and underway at the booming Westfalenstadion.

Tonight is also Mauricio Pochettino's 100th game in charge at White Hart Lane. In that time, the Argentine has cleared out the dead-wood at the club and instilled a real vibrancy that has transformed them into title contenders.

Dortmund have named the strongest XI tonight while Tottenham will start with one of the weakest sides we have seen from them this season. Spurs are in action against Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday, a ground where away sides have been helping themselves this season.

In Kevin Wimmer and Son Heung-Min Son, Tottenham have two players who tangled with Dortmund in the Bundesliga last season. Wimmer's FC Cologne beat Jurgen Klopp's side 2-1 at home and secured a 0-0 at Signal Iduna Park .

Son failed to score against Dortmund last season, he has scored five past them to date.

A big night for 18-year-old midfielder Josh Onomah, then. He's not new to European football having played 126 minutes across five games for Spurs in this competition this season, including a start in the 4-1 win over Monaco. But a knock-out tie at the Westfalenstadion is different matter altogether. His only other starts this season having come in the FA Cup.

As expected, Ben Davies comes in at left-back to replace Danny Rose who has been left at home.

A couple of big changes for Mauricio Pochettino, then. There are five changes in all as the Spurs coach brings in the English trio of Ryan Mason, Tom, Carroll and Josh Onomah into midfield. Harry Kane hasn't been given the night off, but he will start the game from the bench, alongside Erik Lamela.

BREAKING: Harry Kane starts on the bench with Nacer Chadli leading in attack. Josh Onomah and Tom Carroll start in midfield with Mousa Dembele dropping to the bench. Son also comes into the XI, replacing Erik Lamela.

Tottenham team to face Dortmund: Lloris (C), Trippier, Alderweireld, Wimmer, Davies; Mason, Carroll; Onomah, Son, Eriksen; Chadli

Subs: Vorm, Walker, Carter-Vickers, Bentaleb, Dembele, Lamela, Kane

Borussia Dortmund subs: Bürki, Sahin, Ginter, Leitner, Ramos, Subotic, Kagawa

Borussia Dortmund team to face Tottenham: Weidenfeller, Durm, Piszczek, Bender, Hummels, Schmelzer, Weigl, Castro, Mkhitaryan, Reus, Aubameyang

Borussia Dortmund team news:
Sokratis Papastathopoulos is still unavailable due to the muscular problem that has kept him side-lined since February but he is the only absentee from an otherwise fully fit Dortmund squad. Roman Weidenfeller will also return in goal in place of league no. 1 Roman Burki.

Tottenham team news:
The games are coming thick and fast for Mauricio Pochettino as the Argentine looks to balance the club's title challenge with his European aspirations. Dele Alli is one name who will get a rest tonight, not out of choice, however, with the midfielder serving a suspension.

Danny Rose and Eric Dier will also miss the first leg having been left back in London. Rose picked up a cramp in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal with the club deciding not to take any chances while Dier is being rested. Clinton N'Jie and Jan Vertonghen are the club's only other absentees.

The Champions League round of 16 has been a bit tame so far, now it's time for the Europa League to upstage it. What should be a thrilling night begins in just over an hour when Germany and England's second placed side collide as Borussia Dortmund host Tottenham Hotspur.
