Chelsea have confirmed the signing of the highly rated defender Matt Miazga from New York Red Bulls. The 20-year-old star has joined the west London club on a four-and-a-half-year contract.

Miazga, who made his debut for the US national team in November, has shared his pride at signing for Chelsea on 30 January and has revealed he cannot wait to start playing in the Premier League.

"I am very happy to sign for Chelsea, a world-famous club with a reputation for major success," he told Chelsea's official website. "I am delighted to be in the Premier League, the best league in the world, and can't wait to meet my teammates and get going."

Miazga debuted for the Red Bulls shortly after turning 18 and has since established himself as one of the most exciting prospects in the MLS. The defender said moving to Chelsea will give him the best possible opportunity to develop his talents.

"I am still at the beginning of my career but I believe this is the place to develop and learn from some of the best players in the world," the new Chelsea star said.

The American international has a Polish passport, meaning he will not have to obtain a work permit in order to play for the Blues. Prior to joining Chelsea, the likes of Leicester City and Stoke City were also rumoured to have been interested in the player.
