The flood situation along the rivers Elbe, Danube and Saale remained critical on Thursday (June 06) and the eastern German city of Dresden braced for the high waters' peak level expected later in the day.

Large parts along the riverbank in this historic city were flooded as rescue workers made their way through town by motorboat.

Traffic signs were almost entirely submerged in water and pleasure boats moored on the side of the river appeared to be parked in the middle of a lake.

According to local authorities, the water in Dresden is rising very slowly and residents would have to count on a long-lasting flood period.
