A mother and daughter died after they were trapped in a sauna for 90 minutes.

The two women, aged 65 and 45, were at at friend's house in the town of Jicin, 85km northeast of Prague in the Czech Republic, where they were making use of the home spa.

But their relaxing turned to terror when they tried to get out and the door handle came off, trapping them in the sauna. The owner of the sauna went to check on them but discovered the pair dead on the floor.

Police spokeswoman Iva Kormosova said: "The mother and daughter were taking a sauna at their friends' place in a garden colony. The owner thought they were taking too long to come out so she went to check and found them lying on the floor."

The women had tried to smash the window of the door to escape but could not. Emergency services were called and declared the women dead at the scene.

Post-mortem examinations are due to be held, Mail Online reports.
