The FBI has raided the home of a suspect who was killed in a police shooting in Texas.

The federal police confirmed a search on Elton Simpson's Phoenix apartment has taken place to search for clues over what may have prompted the shooting, which left him and another gunman dead, along with a security officer wounded outside an anti-Islam contest in Dallas.

Garland police spokesman officer Joe Harn commended the unnamed officer who shot the armed men at the Prophet Mohammed event for saving lives, according to AP.

He said: "His reaction, and his shooting with a pistol, he did a good job."

One of the suspects was reportedly known to the authorities and linked to Islamic State (Isis). ABC News reported the man was convicted five years ago of lying to federal agents about plans to travel to Africa to join the terror group there.

The Curtis Culwell Center shooting follows the death of an Iraqi immigrant in March who was shot dead outside his apartment in Dallas.
