The President of Argentina, Cristiuna Fernandez de Kirchner, has written an open letter to David Cameron calling for an end to British "colonialism" and that the Falklands Islands be returned.

Published in The Guardian and other newspapers President Fernandez quotes the UN's 1960 proclamation of, "bringing to an end colonialism in all its forms and manifestations". Ms Kirchner had previously made calls for the return of the islands, known in Argentina as Malvinas, during last year's 30th anniversary of the Falklands War between the two countries.

In response a Downing Street spokesperson said that the people of the Falklands had shown "a clear desire to remain British" and the Argentine government should respect their right to self-determination.

A spokesperson for the government of the Falklands Islands also noted, "We are not a colony - our relationship with the United Kingdom is by choice".

A referendum on the islands' political status is to be held in March.
