The Conservatives have taken a significant five-point poll lead over Labour one week before the general election.

An IpsosMORI poll for the Evening Standard newspaper puts David Cameron's party on 35%, up two points, while Labour drifted five points to 30%.

The poll, which was conducted between 26-28 April, is a shift from others that had Tories and Labour neck and neck.

And with just seven days to go until polling day, it is the second largest gap to have emerged in voting intention since 12 April.

In the same IpsosMORI poll, the Liberal Democrats were on 8%, Ukip 10% and the Green Party 8%.

The gap emerged as Ed Miliband recorded a video interview with comedian and political activist Russell Brand in a supposed attempt to win over young voters.

Cameron, meanwhile, said he had stepped up his campaigning in recent days after a perceived lacklustre few weeks on the road.

He told the Guardian: "Sometimes it is the time to throw caution to the winds, let rip and tell people what you really think."

The five point margin follows a Lord Ashcroft poll earlier this week that put the Tories six points ahead.
