The name of a Ukip candidate has been left off the ballot papers at a polling station in Darlington.

Darlington Council confirmed David Hodgson's name was missing from the ballot papers at a station in the borough.

Approximately 89 papers had been issued at the station without the Ukip candidate's name on, the equivalent of 0.1% of the total number of ballot papers printed.

A council spokesperson added "as soon as the issue was identified, corrected ballot papers were issued to the polling station concerned".

There were fears the mistake could temporarily suspend voting in the constituency or force a rerun. However, the council is still urging people to carry on voting as normal.

Ada Burns, chief executive of Darlington Council, said: "We have taken advice from the Electoral Commission and are confident that the election can go ahead as normal. The turnout so far has been excellent and the message is to keep voting."
