A young mother was killed when she leant out of a moving vehicle to vomit following a drinking session and was struck on the head by a roadside object.

Amanda Erza, 24, died from her injuries following the freak accident after celebrations on Father's Day in Osceola, Indiana.

The Mishawaka mum of three was sitting on the lap of a fellow reveller in the front passenger seat of a minivan when it happened.

Resident Michael Lyman called told wsbt22: "It's awfully sad, it's shocking."

The driver and one of the other passengers tried to flee the scene of the crash, but were later apprehended by police.

According to local news sources, Erza had overcome problems in her life to recently enrol on a course to become a teacher.

Michelle Lyman, who lives near where the crash happened, said: "You've got a 24-year-old child you've raised to be a young adult and has their whole life ahead of them.

"And it's snuffed out because of a decision that was made and because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's tragic."

Police arrested the a man, also from Mishawaka, for a suspected drinking offence and also for causing serious bodily injury and leaving the scene.
