Frozen
Will Queen Elsa get a girlfriend in the sequel? Disney official website

Disney has taken a step forward in the past couple of years by ditching the "damsel in distress" persona for its female animated characters and making them strong and independent. Now fans of the hit movie Frozen want the studio to "let it go" further and make Elsa a lesbian for the sequel.

Seventeen-year-old fan Alexis Isabel Moncada kick-started the petition with a tweet asking Disney to give ice queen Elsa a girlfriend. "I hope Disney makes Elsa a lesbian princess imagine how iconic that would be." She added, "Dear @Disney, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend," she tweeted on Sunday (30 April).

Since then, the hashtag has gone viral and has morphed into a campaign requesting the studio gives its audiences a homosexual lead character for the first time ever.

Moncada told MTV: "Growing up, I never saw a princess fall in love with another princess — and neither have girls growing up right now."

It doesn't take much to imagine Elsa as lesbian. While the film shows her as hiding a secret (i.e. her ice powers) because she fears people will not accept her, one can easily relate her struggle to the one many individuals face regarding their sexual orientation.

According to the latest GLAAD index, Disney has not released a single movie (animated or not) with an openly gay character. Giving Elsa a girlfriend in Frozen 2 would surely be a great way to break the trend.

However, not everyone is keen to see a popular character in that light. While the Twitter campaign has many supporters, it has sparked a backlash from people who would prefer to see a straight Elsa and who have started their own #GiveElsaABoyfriend hashtag.
