The shooting occurred at outside Gala Bingo at Harpurhey shopping precinct

A mother and son have been shot in what police describe as a "targeted" attack outside a bingo hall in Manchester.

The 56-year-old woman and her 22-year-old son were attacked by two men outside the Gala Bingo in Harpurhey on 12 January.

The suspects, who were driving a black car, blocked the pair in their vehicle by parking in front of them before opening fire.

The woman was shot in the elbow and her son suffered injuries to his wrist.

Police said the son managed to drive out of the car park before abandoning his car in a nearby street. Both he and his mother then walked to nearby North Manchester General Hospital and were treated for their "not too serious" injuries.

The abandoned vehicle was later recovered by police.

Det supt Alex Millet said: "This appears to be a targeted incident which could have had even more dire consequences. Thankfully it doesn't look like either are too seriously injured.

"We believe the black car was driven by two white men and it's from that car that the shots were fired.

"I want to reassure people that we have had armed response officers to the scene and are now investigating.
