Music icon Madonna made her entrance at The 56th Grammy Awards coordinating outfits with her 'date' for the night, her son David.

The songer wore a black Ralph Lauren suit and trilby, with David in a matching outfit.

"We're both working the Ralph Lauren angle," Madonna told E!'s Ryan Seacrest. "For this look, I followed his lead," she said. "He dressed me tonight. He wanted me to dress like him, so I obeyed him."

The Material Girl said her performance on the night would be "history making."

Madonna will take the stage with Macklemore and 34 couples will get married live on TV during their performance of "Same Love."

"I wouldn't do any old song with any old artist, but I feel like history is going to be made tonight," she said. "So I want to be part of that."

It's the biggest night of the year in the music industry calendar and the worlds most famous stars were preparing to make a show stopping entrance on the red carpet for the 56<sup>th Grammy Awards.

Taylor Swift who is nominated for four Grammy awards including best country album for 'Red' and who is expected to perform, clearly couldn't contain her excitement.

The 24-year-old singer posted an Instagram photo of herself, wide-eyed and open mouthed in anticipation of the night ahead.

Chrissy Teigen posted her picture with the hashtag #getnaked and the message 'Getting ready for Grammys!' censored her hairdo before the big night.

As well as music stars the event draws celebrity figures, movie stars and TV personalities. Actor Billy Crystal made an appearance on the red carpet with his wife.

How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris posted a tweet frrm his car saying: "Heading to <s>@theGRAMMYs with <s>@Davidburtka. Best concert of the year. Expect some random tweets"

Socialite and DJ Paris Hilton wowed onlookers in a shimmering white dress with elaborate lace detail on the back and a sophisticated updo.

E! host and fashion expert kept it demure in a long black dress with dramatic shoulder detail.

Katy Perry posted a pic from her limo stating; "Here come the Hudsons."

The flamoboyant singer is in the running for Song of the Year for 'Roar' and Best Solo Pop Perofrmance, in which she faces competition from Justin Timberlake.

Singer Bonnie McKee was one of the first music stars to arrive and made an immediate impact, contrasting her orange hair with a blue off the shoulder dress.

Blue seems to be popular with the guests with singer Tasha Hobbs opting for a flamboyant, fish tailed, blue silk gown.

Beyonce, Beatles legend Paul McCartney and Taylor Swift will also be performing live.
