Shahrukh Khan has been given police protection as the actor is reportedly the latest target of underworld gangster Ravi Pujari.

"Mumbai Police has decided to heighten the security of superstar Shah Rukh Khan after gangster Ravi Pujari had allegedly tried to get in touch with him yesterday [25 August] afternoon," according to a CNN IBN report.

The reason SRK was threatened by the gangster was regarding his close relationship with friend and business partner Karim Morani, reported India TV.

Morani's Mumbai residence was attacked by two assailants last week. Over five rounds were fired outside his house on Saturday.

While talking to a leading daily, an officer from Mumbai crime branch said: "Morani and Khan are close friends and we suspect that Ravi Pujari may attack Khan also. So we are providing two officers for his protection."

Cops are also keenly monitoring all the visitors and fans who visit SRK's house.

Bollywood stars have become soft targets for this new breed of underworld led by Pujari. Earlier this year, actor Salman Khan was directly contacted by the gangster.

"Salman had a verbal spat on the phone call he received early in the morning in December last year and then took a route to the crime branch," states India TV.

In January 2014, filmmaker Farhan Akhtar and producers Farhan Azmi and Ritesh Sidhwani were also contacted regularly for extortion money.

It has been reported that Ravi Pujari is residing in Australia, organising his criminal activities from there. He is a former associate of Dawood Ibrahim, leader of the Indian organised crime syndicate.
