A powerful storm has hit south-west England and south Wales, leaving thousands of homes without electricity. Huge waves have crashed over sea defences in Devon, washing away part of a railway line.

The storm damage adds to the flooding problems the south-west has been suffering for a month. The Environment Agency has issued nine severe flood warnings in the area, meaning "danger to life".
