A news reader on India's government-run television channel Doordarhsan has been fired for an unintended error in pronouncing Chinese President's name Xi Jinping as "eleven Jinping" mistaking it for the Roman numeral.

The blooper occurred during one of the news bulletins on Wednesday, 17 September, when the Chinese leader was in India for an official visit.

The news reader was said to be working with the television channel on "casual basis" and was not a full-time staff.

"It is an unpardonable mistake. We have debarred her from news reading for a few months," a senior official working for the channel told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The gaffe has evoked a series of reactions on Twitter with many users taking a dig at the anchor for not getting the Chinese president's name right.

Xi was on a three-day official visit to India during which the two countries signed at least 12 key agreements.
