Trevor Kavanagh has confirmed that all five of the Sun's journalists who were arrested and bailed have been "suspended indefinitely" just hours after he rushed to their defence.

Kavanagh, the Sun's associate editor, confirmed on BBC Radio 5 Live that the five senior journalists who were arrested as part of Operation Elveden into police bribery claims have been suspended.

He wrote in the Sun earlier that they had been "needlessly dragged from their beds in dawn raids, arrested and held in police cells while their homes are ransacked".

John Kay, Nick Parker, John Edwards, Geoff Webster and John Sturgis, all of whom hold senior positions at the tabloid, were arrested over the weekend.
