Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Lions – both teams at the top of the table – face off in the 38th match of the 2016 edition of the Indian Premier League on 8 May. The Gautam Gambhir-led side have won six games so far, losing just three in the process.

Kolkata's strategy of retaining their core group of players has ensured that they remain in contention to not only qualify for the knock-out stages but also win the league. If you look at the last three to four seasons, the Knight Riders have been one of the more consistent sides in IPL history.

A look at this season too will show that they have a balanced squad with both the bat and the ball and it would be considered a disappointment if they do not qualify for the play-off stages.

The new franchise in the mix, Gujarat Lions have performed solid if not spectacularly so far, winning six out of the 10 games played. However, they come into this clash on the back of three straight defeats and need a win here to make sure they do not slide down the table.

Batting is the strength of the Suresh Raina-led side, but the entire team will have to step up as teams begin their battle for a play-off spot.
