Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is delighted to have tied down young winger Jordan Ibe to a new contract that will see him remain at Anfield at least until the summer of 2020.

The Reds boss is absolutely certain that the new contract was thoroughly deserved after some impressive performances for the club this season.

Ibe spent the first-half of the season on loan at Derby County, where he impressed with some eye catching performances and that prompted Rodgers to bring him back to Merseyside and give him a place in Liverpool's first-team squad.

He immediately impressed with some his performance, especially against Everton in the Merseyside Derby, but an injury in the Europa League against Besiktas cut short his progress and has since struggled to get back to his best.

However, the Reds boss is confident that it is a matter of time before he gets up to speed, but has warned the young winger that he has a long way to become a consistent performer at the top level.

"He has thoroughly deserved it," Rodgers said, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

"He is a young kid that has got a lot of potential. He still has a lot of work to do to become that consistent performer at the top level, but there's no doubting his potential and he has really grown and developed over the course of the last season," the former Swansea City boss explained.

"He came back from Derby and had taken on board all that he was coached there and had done exceptionally well."

"I could see the change in him then. He was very focused and came in and did exceptionally well. Unfortunately, he got injured in Besiktas and that kept him out for a little bit."

"It has just taken him a bit of time to get back up to speed again. He's a great talent, a big talent here for the football club and I'm delighted that he has been able to sign and commit to the future of the club," the Reds manager added.
